How Often Should You Redesign Your Website?

If you are asking yourself this question, it’s probably time to redesign your website. Why else would you be asking? OK, maybe you just came across this blog and are now wondering that same question. If it’s been a few years since you last updated your website, it’s probably time to at least consider it. Unlike your social media page, your website design is your digital storefront. A small business must keep it looking enticing and current to keep customers coming back. However, we all know redesigning a website is not an easy task and certainly not something you want to do every day. So then, when is it time to redesign a website?

Here are 5 questions you should ask yourself:

  1. Is my website mobile friendly?

  2. Does my website look current?

  3. Does my website function well on all devices (browsers, screen sizes, etc.)?

  4. Is my website better than my competitors?

  5. Am I proud to share my website with clients?

If you answered “no” to any of those questions, it’s time for a redesign. Let’s dig a little deeper into each one of these questions.

Is my website mobile friendly?

Roughly 56 percent of consumer traffic is coming to your website from a mobile device. If your current site isn’t mobile friendly, this should be alarming for you. The fact is that more and more of your visitors are coming from mobile. Embrace it or your small business will suffer the consequences.

Does my website look current?

If your website has outdated features, broken links, or old information, it’s time for an update. Not updating your website makes your business look stale and out of touch with your customers. Adding more modern features like blogs and videos lets your customer know you are up with the trends.

Does my website function well on all devices?

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that all your customers search and see the exact things you search and see. That means, we all aren’t searching on the same search engine or mobile device. Make sure you check how your site is laid out on all platforms. Sometimes the desktop design is not the best in a mobile design.

Is my website better than my competitors?

Take the challenge and rate your site compared to your competitors. What do they offer that you don’t? Redesigning your website to make it look more attractive gives you an edge over your competitors. It can also improve how your customers see you. Do you want to be seen as the fast food restaurant of your industry? Or a five star restaurant?

Am I proud to share my website with clients?

This is a no brainer. Your website is the face of your business. If you aren’t proud to share your website, get it redesigned ASAP. Period.

In conclusion, how often you need to redesign your website will depend on what industry you work in as well as the goals of your business. We would say that a good benchmark is to plan a redesign every 2-3 years. This allows your business to stay current in a manageable fashion, without overdoing it. Always remember that your website is like home ownership, you're never really completely done working on it.
